A tragic incident occurred in Gujarat’s Vadodara district on Wednesday morning as the Gambhira-Mujpur bridge collapsed, killing at least nine people. The bridge, which connects Anand and Vadodara districts, broke down during peak traffic hours, plunging multiple vehicles into the Mahisagar (Mahi) River. The accident has sparked outrage, with locals blaming administrative negligence.
What Happened: According to initial reports, four vehicles including two trucks, a Bolero SUV, and a pickup van were on the bridge when a sudden cracking sound was heard. Moments later, the bridge crumbled, sending all vehicles into the river below. Eyewitnesses and local authorities responded immediately.
Rescue Operation: Fire brigade teams, local police, and the Vadodara district administration launched an urgent rescue operation. Locals also participated actively in extracting injured passengers from the submerged wreckage. So far, three people have been rescued and sent to nearby hospitals. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Bridge Condition and Public Anger:
Residents alleged that the bridge, an important link for commuters between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra, had been in poor condition for a long time. Despite repeated warnings, no action was taken. Locals described the bridge as not just structurally weak but also notorious as a suicide point.
Political Response: Padra MLA Chaitanyasinh Zala visited the site soon after the collapse. Senior Congress leader Amit Chavda took to social media to demand immediate rescue efforts and the provision of alternative routes for traffic.
What Happens Next: Authorities have cordoned off the area and initiated a formal investigation into the collapse. A detailed technical inspection and safety audit of similar bridges in the region is expected.
